The Old Mattress Found in South Africa
Archaeologists have discovered and excavated a 77,000-year-old mattress in South Africa in the Sibudo rock shelter near the Indian Ocean. This three by six-foot bedding is made up of not more than an inch compressed layers that were doubled as a sleeping surface and a working surface as well. This ancient mattress or bed also had its own fixed and fitted pest repellant. This bedding contained layers of grasses and scrappy bushes including stems and leaves of a Cryptocarya woodii, a variety of laurel tree. Its scent from its leaves is said to have a chemical that can exterminate mosquitoes. Base from the age of the bedding and other relics that were discovered, it is believed that the individual or hominoid that slumbered in the cave was a Homo Sapien.
The first hominoids had diverse sleeping spots. For the Australopithecus, since they are smaller than a chimpanzee, have most likely built nest-like beds made of twigs and leaves and slept on treetops as it becomes dangerous sleeping on the ground because of predators that stalked and hunted for food at night. The structure of the remains of this early hominoids indicated that they indeed slept on trees because of their curved fingers and lengthy arms which were convenient and suitable for climbing trees.
According to biological anthropologist Richard Wrangham, millions of years ago, the Homo Erectus was said to have been the first hominid to have tried to sleep on the ground because of their capability to make fire. Wrangham suggested that when they discovered their capacity to build and control fire, they also discovered that they can sleep on the ground at the same time prevented nocturnal predators. The adjustment from climbing and sleeping on trees eventually disappeared. And the Homo erectus developed a more contemporary physique.
